A Letter from the Rector
ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2006
Hello Friends:
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. On
September 10, St. John's Vestry unanimously decided to have it's
Concluding Liturgical Celebration on September 24. You're most welcomed to this
Eucharist, when we'll recall all who have been a part of St. John's since
it's inception in 1988 and incorporation in 1993. In particular I would like
to make especial mention of Fr. Hampton Elmore, the founder, and Fr. Ralph
Campbell who passed the mantel on to me in 1997. May these two priests
and all the
dear departed
faithful from St. John's through the mercy of God rest in peace.
The hours I have spent presiding at the
Eucharist and worshipping with the devout but little flock at St. John's for
nearly 500 Sundays have been truly sacred, spiritually enriching and
pastorally meaningful for me.
I thank all the parishioners, visitors and clergy who have been a part of this
Church since July 1997. I'd like to thank the Vestry for their dedication
and commitment to St. John's: Mary Anne Elmore (Sr. Warden); Ellen Lee (Jr.
Warden); Nancy Strange (Bookkeeper); Mary Mauk (Secretary); Marie Elvidge (Member);
Fred Weiss (Member). I'd also like to mention some of the other members who
have also been a significant and integral part of St. John's: Leona Caracciolo,
Mary Castle, Vivian Coelho, Ida Dowling, Janet Goland, Joan Para, Kathy
Riccomi and the Walker Family. I'm also grateful to Bishop Joseph Rose, Abbott
Robert Dittler, OSB, and others who have provided liturgical and priestly
support to this Little Flock over these years.
During this Fourteenth Week after Trinity may we experience an
outpouring of God's Spirit of Love, Sacrifice and Freedom. May our lives be Spirit-driven and may
we continue to BE RADIANT!
For It is better to let the radiance GLOW, than to let the darkness flow.
Let us recall those who have gone ahead of us and share
life in heaven. May their heavenly glory bring peace into our lives on earth.
Let us pray in special way for all the victims of terrorism and wars. May I request you to join the Community of
St. John's in Hayward
as we
pray every Sunday for you and
"People of Goodwill throughout the world
as we grieve our losses, restore national and international safety, rebuild our
homes, cities and the world with greater peace and
rededicate our lives with compassion, solidarity and inner freedom."
In
1988
the Rev. Hampton Elmore offered Liturgical support and Pastoral care to a group
of Traditional Episcopalians who were disenfranchised.
In
1993
this Community was incorporated as ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, HAYWARD,
CA . This non-profit religious corporation was affiliated
with the United Episcopal Church of North America (UECNA) and was its first
Rector.
In
1994
St. John's Episcopal Church was determined to be an
exempt organization described under section 501 (c) (3).
After the death of Fr. Hampton, The Rev. Ralph Campbell
succeeded him as Rector with The Most Rev. Stephen C. Reber, Sr. as the
Presiding Bishop.
When in July
1997
St. John's Church accepted Fr. Ariosto
Coelho as its Rector, the Parish also decided to belong to the Anglican Catholic
Diocese of the Pacific & Southwest.
In July
1999
the community of St. John's decided to be an
Independent Parish Church using the liturgy of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.
On
December 21, 2002 Fr. Coelho was officially
installed as the Rector of St. John's Independent Parish Church by Abbot and
Bishop Robert Dittler, OSB, in the presence of clergy,
parishioners and other invitees.
Our faith is based on the teachings and life of Jesus Christ,
Word of God made flesh, as written in the Holy Scripture and upheld by the
Ecumenical Councils of the undivided "Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church."
[Dec. 21, 2002:

There is tremendous
happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is
half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel
rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.
"Remember
the Five rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from
hatred.
2. Free your mind from
worries. 3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.
Today is a gift, that's why it is
called the present. It is
better to be a LIGHT than to spread the
darkness."
